The Effect of Monopoly Game on English Vocabulary Mastery of Descriptive Text

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out whether or not teaching vocabulary by using Monopoly Game give effect on students English vocabulary mastery of Descriptive Text especially about noun and adjective with topic of people and animal at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Palangka Raya. This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental design by one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling technique and it was VII-1 class. The data were collected through Vocabulary Test that consisted of pre-test and post-test. Then, the data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon Matched Pair Signed Rank test because the data was not normally distributed. The result of this research showed that the mean of pre-test was 63.25 and post-test was 82.12. The value of the test statistic was |4.936| and for 5% (.05) level of significant was 1.645. It meant that the null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the researcher concluded that teaching Vocabulary using Monopoly Game to seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Palangka Raya gave significant effect on students’ vocabulary mastery of Descriptive Text especially about noun and adjective with topic of people and animal.
