Abstract

Pneumonia infection caused by multidrug-resistant (Klebsiella pneumoniae, MDR) poses a major challenge in respiratory tract infection control. Green synthesis of metal nanoparticles using natural-based materials offers a safer and more environmentally friendly therapeutic alternative. This review examines 13 experimental studies evaluating the antibacterial efficacy of ZnO-NPs, AgNPs, CuO-NPs, SeNPs, and AuNPs against MDR K. pneumoniae. Data were analyzed from PubMed, ScienceDirect, MDPI, Springer, and Google Scholar publications from 2014 to 2024, focusing on MIC values, inhibition zones, and antibiofilm effects. The findings indicate that ZnO and AgNPs demonstrate the highest antibacterial potential, with low MIC values and synergistic effects when combined with conventional antibiotics. One study reported the combined in vitro and in vivo efficacy of green-synthesized nanoparticles. The proposed mechanisms include oxidative stress induction, membrane disruption, and virulence suppression. Overall, green-synthesized nanoparticles show promising potential as an innovative approach for treating MDR pneumonia.
