Abstract

Indonesia has the largest number of K-pop fans in the world according to Twitter in 2022. Supporting idols by watching concerts, purchasing merchandise, and participating in fan meetings are examples of fan loyalty to their idols. However, many fans believe they have a special connection with their idols. This feeling of having a close, even intimate relationship with an idol is a typical description of an imaginary relationship, which is called a parasocial relationship. And it turns out that many K-pop fans experience cases of parasocial relationships. This study aimed to review the phenomenon of parasocial relationships that develop in the lives of K-pop fans and whether this behavior affects their lives. Parasocial relationships are more intimate than parasocial interactions, where these relationships can contribute to anxiety, loneliness, social isolation, lack of self-confidence, and even more serious mental disorders. However, not many K-pop fans are aware of this phenomenon. The toxic environment of K-pop fandom even increases the risk of negative parasocial relationships. The importance of knowing the limits when idolizing someone must be emphasized to the younger generation in order to prevent the emergence of parasocial relationships. Prospective follow-up studies to determine preventive screening for mental disorders in idolizing K-pop is needed in the future.
