Larastika Larang dance drama is a research-based performance artwork that aims to revitalize batik Ponorogo as a local cultural heritage that is increasingly marginalized. This study seeks to document and analyze the creative process behind the creation of the work, starting from idea exploration, cultural research, scriptwriting, choreography, to musical composition. The study employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods and the creative process theory by Wallas and Munandar to examine the stages of preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation throughout the creative and performance process. The results show that Larastika Larang is a multidisciplinary collaboration between MBKM students of the Faculty of Performing Arts at ISI Surakarta and local cultural practitioners. The artistic elements include a dramatic script structured into five main scenes, choreography inspired by traditional batik motifs and Reog movements, and traditional music arranged innovatively to shape the emotional and dramatic flow of the performance. These elements form a unified theatrical work that is not only aesthetically appealing but also communicative, educational, and contextually responsive to local socio-cultural issues. This study concludes that a research-based and interdisciplinary creative process is an effective strategy for creating meaningful artworks, while also serving as a medium for cultural preservation in a reflective and transformative manner.
