Abstract

This study aims to describe the cultural values in the myth of the Bekakak tradition in Gunung Gamping, Yogyakarta. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using a literary anthropology approach. Data analysis in this study uses an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data analysis, and verification. The results of the study indicate that the myth in the Bekakak tradition represents cultural values regarding five things, namely: (1) The essence of life based on the myth of the Yogyakarta Bekakak Tradition, namely that humans consider life to be something good, a gift that has a positive impact on the lives of other humans. (2) The essence of human work contained in the myth of the Yogyakarta Bekakak Tradition is working as a stone collector for their survival. The work is done by collecting limestone with traditional tools. (3) The nature of humans in space and time is oriented towards the future so that what they do now will also have an impact on the future. However, they do not forget the past as part of life lessons. The essence of space and time in the mythical story of the Bekakak tradition is that what happened in the past is part of the present and its sustainability must be maintained. (4) The essence of the relationship between humans and nature in the mythical tradition of the Bekakak tradition is depicted by the attitude of the residents around Mount Gamping who always maintain the sustainability of nature by holding the Bekakak ritual to prevent landslides and endanger residents around the mountain. (5) The essence of the relationship between humans and humans is seen during the Bekakak ceremony. The sacrifice that should have been a real human is replaced by the residents with a human doll as a manifestation of humanity towards others. Thus, the mythical story of the Bekakak tradition is the origin of the cultural tradition found on Mount Gamping, Yogyakarta, and is still maintained to this day.
