Abstract

Purple eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is one of the most widely cultivated horticultural crops; however, its productivity is often hampered by water loss from evaporation, fluctuations in soil temperature, and competition with weeds, which can reduce plant growth and yield. The use of organic mulch can serve as an alternative cultivation technology because it improves soil microclimate conditions and increases crop productivity. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of organic mulch on the growth and yield of purple eggplant. The study was conducted in Pakkasalo Village, Sibulue Subdistrict, Bone Regency, from June to September 2025. The study used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with five treatments: no mulch (M0), straw mulch (M1), rice husk mulch (M2), dried breadfruit leaf mulch (M3), and corn mulch (M4), each replicated four times. The observed parameters included plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, fruit number, fruit weight, and fruit size. The data were analyzed using an ANOVA test, followed by a 5% BNT test. The results showed that the use of organic mulch had a significant effect on the growth and yield of purple eggplant. The corn husk mulch treatment (M4) yielded the best results with an average fruit weight of 89.00 g, 7.4 fruits per plant, and the highest yield of 20.8 tons/ha. This increase in yield is believed to be related to mulch’s ability to maintain soil temperature, suppress weeds, stabilize soil temperature, and increase the efficiency of water and nutrient use.
