Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze how the musical aspect in a method of achieving health through the combination of dance and music practices, known as nembang mbeksa can act as music therapy. The musical aspects emphasized include (1) the structure of repetition of melody and lyrics, (2) bubbling voicing technique, (3) humming voicing technique, (4) selection of innate tones with perfect fifth intervals, (5) the concept of voicing from within, (6) the concept of freedom in improvising voicing, (7) lyrics containing affirmations. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through participatory ethnography methods, then analyzed through comparative-conceptual analysis methods, where the findings of the emphasized musical aspects will be aligned and compared with the results of participant interviews and literature sources related to music therapy. The results of the analysis can be concluded that the structure of repetition of melody and lyrics is directly related to the meditative state, humming and bubbling techniques play a role in reducing tension in the respiratory system, to relieving headaches. The selection of innate tones with perfect fifth intervals and the concept of voicing from within can have an effect on suppressing anxiety. The concept of freedom in improvisation gives participants space to release emotions that lead to stress levels. Lyrics with positive affirmations can build physical and psychological resilience in individuals.
