Abstract

This study analyzes the character Gimpul in Krisna Hariadi's novel Balada Gimpul using a literary psychology approach. The focus of the study is directed at the ambition of the main character Gimpul, a village farmer who has a strong desire to become a "city person." This ambition triggers an identity crisis that drives Gimpul to build a false image through various impulsive actions. The analysis shows that the character's behavior is dominated by strong id drives, while the ego function is weakened and the superego's role experiences failure in controlling actions. This condition represents a personality conflict that leads to egoism, consumer behavior, and deviations from social and moral values. The author of the novel implicitly conveys a message and warning to readers about the dangers of uncontrolled ambition, especially when it conflicts with social reality and self-identity. The research method used is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis techniques, based on Sigmund Freud's theory of literary psychology. The results show that egoism born from excessive ambition can give rise to consumerism and impulsive actions that ultimately backfire on the individual himself, while also causing social upheaval in the surrounding environment. These findings emphasize the importance of personality balance in facing the demands of social change
