Abstract

The article entitled “The Process of Creating Abimantra Dance Works at the 2023 Indonesian Arts Festival (FKI) in Denpasar, Bali” analyzes the creative process behind the Abhimantra dance within the 2023 competition at Festival Kesenian Indonesia 2023. The festival provides opportunities for outstanding arts students from higher education institutions to compete and achieve recognition. The creation of Abhimantra is academically significant because it reveals how choreography is shaped within a competitive setting marked by psychological pressure, institutional representation, and strict technical regulations. This study addresses two main questions: (1) the form of the Abhimantra dance and (2) its creative process. Using a qualitative method with participant observation, the author—who was directly involved as a dancer—collected the data. The analysis applies Sumandiyo Hadi’s theory of dance form and creation, along with Ahimsa Putra’s perspective on text and context in art. The findings show that Abhimantra is a duet dance rooted in Surakarta style vocabulary, incorporating surrealist concepts, expansive and extreme movements, and strong choreographic elements such as costume, makeup, lighting, and music. The creative process was constrained by competition guidelines and shaped by the pressure to win, resulting in a distinctive choreography tailored to competitive demands.
