Abstract

Climate change alters agricultural suitability and increases uncertainty in smallholder crop decisions. This study examined the provenance and eligibility of an open dataset, described crop adoption and abandonment, constructed a four-cell typology from Change and distribution status, and derived cautiously bounded implications for adaptive agribusiness. An exploratory secondary-data design was applied to all 294 crop-change records in DataClim.csv, covering 74 species and 14 countries/regions. Future Mean was calculated as the mean of 12 projected suitability scores across SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5, two periods (2041–2070 and 2071–2100), and three climate models; Delta Future equaled Future Mean minus Current. Adoption comprised 168 records (57.14%) and abandonment 126 (42.86%). The largest cell was adoption–introduced (n = 130; 44.22%), but the association between Change and introduced/native status was not significant (Yates-corrected χ² = 2.627; p = 0.105). Mann–Whitney tests identified exploratory differences in Current, Future Mean, MAR, and SAIN, but not Delta Future. Because records are clustered across species and locations and the dataset lacks household-economic variables, the typology is descriptive rather than causal. Its relevance for Indonesia, particularly Central Kalimantan, therefore requires validation using local agroecological and socioeconomic data.
