Abstract

Student tardiness is a form of disciplinary violation that disrupts learning effectiveness and reflects low levels of self-regulation. This study aimed to provide an in-depth description of the implementation of group counselling using the behavior contract technique to reduce student tardiness at Madrasah Aliyah Wahid Hasyim. The study employed a qualitative case study design. The participants consisted of eight students in grades X and XI who demonstrated a high frequency of lateness (10–15 occurrences within one semester). Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that prior to the intervention, tardiness was influenced by habitual late waking, dependence on peers, transportation constraints, and low awareness of behavioral consequences. The group counselling sessions facilitated self-reflection, experience sharing, and the development of responsibility through group dynamics. The collaboratively constructed behavior contract strengthened students’ commitment through clearly defined behavioral targets, time frames, and mutually agreed consequences. Following the intervention, all participants showed a reduction in tardiness accompanied by adaptive behavioral changes, including earlier preparation for school, better morning planning, and improved adherence to school rules. The study concludes that the behavior contract technique is effective in group counselling settings not only as a behavior control mechanism but also as a means of fostering self-regulation and internalizing responsibility. These findings provide practical implications for guidance and counselling services in addressing student discipline problems through educational and preventive approaches.
