Abstract

Avoidant personality is characterized by a persistent tendency to avoid social interactions, low self-esteem, and an intense fear of criticism and rejection. This condition affects not only interpersonal relationships but also psychological functioning and overall quality of life. Research on avoidant personality within the field of guidance and counseling has largely relied on quantitative approaches and symptom measurement, resulting in limited understanding of individuals’ first-person subjective experiences. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of individuals with avoidant personality using a qualitative phenomenological approach through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Two participants were selected using purposive sampling and participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through iterative reading, initial noting, development of emergent themes, and clustering into superordinate themes. The findings indicate that avoidant personality develops from unmet emotional experiences, such as low-support parenting and the loss of significant figures, which trigger social anxiety, negative cognitions, and avoidance behavior as a coping strategy toward anticipated negative evaluation. Consistent social support and cognitive-behavioral strategies contribute to increased self-awareness, emotional regulation, and gradual willingness to engage in social relationships. These findings provide practical implications for counseling services, particularly in developing experience-based assessment, fostering empathic therapeutic relationships, and designing contextual interventions oriented toward clients’ subjective meaning-making.
